John Ciardi describes Henley's Invictus as technically perfect but dishonest. Henley spent some horrible years in his 20's in hospital recovering from TB and the strum und drang of Invictus keynotes his attitude of those years.

But then note his "dainty," whimsical poem Villanelle where he seemingly commits the villanelle form to only counter-balancing the bravado of his Invictus. Which is Henley? It is hard to disagree with Ciardi that Invictus is a bit dishonest, but perhaps his Villanelle is just as dishonest.

What is undeniable is that Henley is wrong to characterize the villanelle form as not suitable for serious mortal subjects. Dylan Thomas' villanelle Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night protesting his father's acquiescence to death certainly belies that assertion.

(Some musings on a dark and stormy day. I think I prefer Henley's Villanelle, but lacking bell, flute, and organ, my banjo will have to "serve its purpose passing well" albeit not a "dainty thing." )

Finding Nemo. What a wonderful production by the CCS-Leland Middle School Show Choir under the direction of Kimberly Rexrode, music teacher and resources coach.

Staged in CCS-Leland’s huge new gymnasium, Chairman Bob Spencer, I, and our wives made Saturday’s matinee along with almost 400 parents and children after a near SRO crowd Friday night.

The brilliant costuming of the 50-member chorus was highlighted by the superb voices of Nemo played by Reagan Phillips, Marlin by Maycee Grass, and Coral by Rebecca Holderied.

The dominant themes of unity and perseverance in Finding Nemo’s songs are particularly suited for our school as we prepare for our 25th year: “We Swim Together” and “Just Keep Swimming.”

“BRAVO” from Bob and me to the Middle School Show Choir and the resources team under Dean Jean Lafave and coach Rexrode, as we eagerly anticipate your next production.
